Welcome Pilgrims

This web site is dedicated to the great John Wayne. I will try to be different than most of the other Duke sites. Most of them give lots of information about his films, a filmography, pictures from his films, etc. Most of these sites don't change after they are posted. The content of this site will change from time to time, if you join my mailing list I will notify you when there are changes or new features added. To join the mailing list go here to the mailing list link or send me your comments by using the link at the bottom of this or any page on the site.

My views and information about John Wayne and the topics I select are gleaned from many different sources, print (books, magazines), Internet, and general media. A sources page link is below for you to consult. I hope you will return periodically to see what I have come up with.

As many of you know I am always tinkering with this site to add more features. I am in the progress of making some more changes, so bookmark or add to your favorites this site so that you can check back regularly. Check the table below for links to other interesting areas of this site. The Gallery has been beefed up with more pictures and several film reviews have been added with more to come.

John Wayne's Tribute to America is an MPI Home Video DVD release. Under its original title Swing Out, Sweet Land, this Emmy-winning variety show was originally broadcast on NBC on November 29, 1970. The 80-minute special was a rousing, patriotic, and unifying reminder of America's greatness. This will be a welcome trip down memory lane, or a nostalgic reminder of a kind of patriotic spirit that had grown increasingly old-fashioned even in 1970. Swing Out, Sweet Land offers an abundance of one-of-a-kind highlights, like Bing Crosby playing Mark Twain; Roscoe Lee Browne as Frederick Douglass; Ann-Margaret dancing up a patriotic storm; William Shatner doing some "serious acting" as John Adams; Lucille Ball as the voice of the Statue of Liberty; George Burns poking fun at Jack Benny in a hilarious walk-on cameo; Ricky and David Nelson as Confederate and Union enemies; Johnny Cash billed as a "locomotive troubadour," singing a flawless rendition of "Ribbon of Steel"; and Bob Hope doing his war-time comedy act... at Valley Forge! That's just a sampling of the stars on hand for John Wayne's Tribute to America.

The John Wayne Cliffhanger Collection is a boxed set released by Passport Video. It is a 5-Disc set that includes all three of the serials that John Wayne made in 1932-33, The Shadow of the Eagle, The Hurricane Express, and The Three Musketeers.

Also check out the Directors. These DVDs are non-John Wayne films of the Duke's frequent directors: John Ford, Howard Hawks, Henry Hathaway, Andrew V. McLaglen, and William Wellman. Check out the Men In The Movies page for boxed sets released by Warner Home Video starring John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, and Paul Newman.

Three years ago Amazon set out to design and build an entirely new class of device—a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. The result is Amazon Kindle. Amazon designed Kindle to provide an exceptional reading experience. Thanks to electronic paper, a revolutionary new display technology, reading Kindle’s screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper—and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen. Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot and is designed for ambidextrous use so both "lefties" and "righties" can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time. Click the Kindle link and read about it and watch the videos. This device is the greatest thing since the printing press!

CALENDAR - One of the greatest movie stars of all time (not to mention an American legend), John Wayne appeared in nearly 200 films, most of them Hollywood Westerns and many of them classics. This calendar features twelve different images of the Duke himself. The new 2010 John Wayne wall calendar is now available here. Also check out Leonard Maltin's Must See Movies 2010, 365 day desk calendar.

POSTERS - This is the newest section to the store. Check out the four poster sets.

PICTURES - Check out this section for your favorite John Wayne photos and also some of his Co-Stars photos. Also added is the Cowboy Art, TV Westerns, and World War II pictures and prints.

Check out the SPECIALS on the main store page for some interesting items that are non-Duke. The James Bond Ultimate Collection features all 21 official 007 adventures. Each film is presented as 2-disc edition. And for your reading pleasure try Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide, The Trail Beyond - Volume IX an annual publication about the films of the Duke and Harry Carey Jr's book A Company of Heroes: My Life As An Actor In The John Ford Stock Company. Also for those of you that have been waiting for years for the mini-series Centennial to come to DVD, it has finally arrived.

The long awaited Batjac film Seven Men From Now (1956) was released by Paramount Home Entertainment. This was the first of seven western films starring Randolph Scott and directed by Budd Boetticher. Also co-starring in this film is Lee Marvin and Gail Russell. This was a comeback film of sorts for Gail Russell as she had not made a film in five years. You will enjoy the fine feature about her on this DVD release titled "The John Wayne Stock Company: Gail Russell". The screenplay was written by Burt Kennedy and one of the producers was Andrew V. McLaglen, son of actor Victor McLaglen. Burt Kennedy went on to direct two John Wayne films, The War Wagon (1967) and The Train Robbers (1973). Andrew V. McLaglen later directed five John Wayne films, McLintock (1963), Hellfighters (1969), The Undefeated (1969), Chisum (1970), and Cahill, United States Marshal (1973).

Also by Paramount was The Batjac Suspense Collection. This is a collection of four films released by John Wayne's production company between 1953 and 1956. John Wayne did not appear in any of these films.
